Chinese aid to Darfur

A Chinese envoy visited the internally displaced people in the Sakali Camp in Darfur to show China's commitment to humanitarian aid. The recent shift to more bilateral forms of humanitarian funding has created more space for non-Western actors to participate in humanitarianism. So far, China has jumped at this "opportunity," especially in Africa.

The source for that news story is Xinhua. Should we therefore be skeptical?

if i can throw in my 2 cents... china has been the main source of funding for the sudanese rebels because of their oil interests in africa.. therefore, i'm not sure that china's hand in "rebuilding" darfur can necessarily be trusted. especially since they have constantly backed the sudanese government's choice to not interfere in the darfur genocides..

anyway, i think this is in awesome blog saabie. keep it up!

all good news and publicity for China. Their ability to seemingly dive headlong into volatile and problematic situations and still hold their weight is impressive. perhaps the tide will turn with the hijacking of the Darfur issue in line with the Olympics, but I think the Chinese may surprise us all once again... looking forward to finding out.
