Taking Culturism too far

A few comments:

1) Asylum is a reactive policy. People come because they are persecuted. No one forces them to make claims. The agency is with the asylum seeker and is not an infringement on culture.

2) The arguments for cultural sensitivity made here deny the asylum seeker a voice and agency. It is up to the asylum seeker to declare that he or she has been persecuted not for the country of asylum to give protection based on this claim. Not for the host country to deny asylum because a practice might be "culturally appropriate."

3) Asylum is not about keeping "crazy people" out but rather the purpose is to give temporary protection and this is an international responsibility.
