Obama and McCain Clash on Immigration

US presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain have clashed over their commitment to immigration reform. Addressing a conference of Hispanic officials in Washington, Mr McCain, the Republican candidate, said the US must secure its borders. Mr Obama, the Democratic Party candidate, said he admired Mr McCain's attempt last year to get an immigration reform bill approved by Congress but said that McCain has since 'walked away' from that legislation.

During the long Democratic primary period, Obama drew significantly fewer votes from Hispanics than his main opponent, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.). Recent polls suggest that Obama has far greater support within that group than McCain. A Gallup Polll this month found that 66 percent of Hispanics said they favored Obama, while 29 percent said they supported McCain -- far below the estimated 40 percent of Latinos who voted for President Bush four years ago in a record showing for a GOP presidential candidate
