A Mile High of Unity - Si Se Puede
On such a historic day such as it was on August 28, 2008, the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's 'I have a Dream' speech, I had the opportunity to watch history being made again- at the Democratic National Convention in my home state of Colorado. The highlight was obviously Presidential candidate Barack Obama's acceptance speech, which was none short of genius. However, there was another moment during the eight hours I was there, that warmed my heart. It was at the end of Albuquerque resident Teresa Asena's speech, a citizen's story that Obama chose to showcase during a series of small vignettes of American stories just before his speech, when she ended her speech with 'si se puede' (yes we can). The crowd of 75,000 joined in and started chanting 'si se puede.' It was a moment of unity unlike any other I have experienced. There we were, Americans, many of whom antagonistic towards open immigration policies, uniting to yell in Spanish. The women next to me, a mother from Loveland, had no idea what she was yelling, but joined in as enthusiastically as anybody else. To make immigration work in the US, to make it a fair and balanced process for all those involved, this unity is the backdrop that we need. I hope the chant resonates all throughout America.
