The nation’s Supreme Court has approved asylum for a group of Chinese nationals for the first time. The family filed for refuge status five years ago after entering South Korea as tourists. The court also granted refuge status to two other Chinese nationals leading the South Korean chapter of an overseas Chinese coalition calling for democracy in China. The court acknowledged their fear of persecution due to their involvement in anti-government activities in accordance with the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
South Korea, which is a signatory of a 1992 United Nations treaty on protecting refugees, has granted refugee status to 95 out of more than 2,100 people seeking asylum.
