The mission of 'Towards Recognition' is:
Toward Recognition is a new blog with the primary goal of raising awareness on the topic of environmental migration among academics, policy makers, the media, and the general public. This issue is brought to the forefront of public perception through the conveyance of relevant articles, media, links, and current news. Towards recognition of who or what?
Ultimately, Towards Recognition would like to see formal recognition of environmental migrants in various forms. Each individual action, program, or policy initiative by governments and agencies around the world which recognizes the link between the environment and human displacement is one step closer to this end goal, mitigation of problem as a whole, and an achievement for environmental migrants all over the world.
Our position is that the 1951 Refugee Convention should not be amended to address environmental displacement. Any initiative to widen the scope of the current convention may be overwhelming, and most countries would likely not sign. This also may result in a lowering of protection standards for refugees and even undermine the international refugee protection regime altogether.
A new legal instrument by the United Nations could grant the rights to those who are displaced from specific environmental factors related to climate change. Formal recognition in this instrument will provide internationally assured protection, independent of, and separate from, the actions of their own governments. It will protect the rights of environmental migrants within their own country, as well as when they cross borders. This is viewed by Towards Recognition as one of the greatest achievements in the push for recognition of environmental migrants.
